批判性思维是西方教育的基石。本课程将通过阅读和讨论帮助学生从批判的角度理解和分析文章的技能,认识常见的修辞和逻辑方法,了解美国文学的写作风格和语言特点。帮助学生建立强大的批判性思维能力,并激发学生对学习英语乃至美国文化的兴趣。课程的文章均选择美国经典语文教材William H. McGuffey的“The Eclectic Readers”。同时,该课程对英语标准化考试阅读部分的成绩提升也会有很大的帮助作用。

Course Overview

To introduce, through reading, critical thinking.  Critical thinking is the cornerstone of Western Education and requires students to develop the mental process of actively and skilfully conceptualizing, applying, analysing, synthesizing, and evaluating information to reach an answer or conclusion. It has replaced rote learning as the central goal of education.

Course Length

Five 45-minute lessons. Some small readings will be required for homework.

Course Objectives

1. To introduce the process of conceptualizing ideas through the written word.

2. To start the development of analysing the ideas that have been discovered.

3. To evaluate the ideas to answer questions on the topics and reach their own conclusions and to be able to communicate these answers and conclusions clearly.

What is critical thinking? Why is it important? We will discuss the two questions and then discuss the ideas surrounding the in class reading material.

Students will ask questions about the homework for clarification of the text. We will then discuss the following questions:

1. What would have happened if Jennie’s dad had not died?

2. Why would Jennie and he mother not accept money from Gorge’s father?

3. What, in your opinion, is the writer trying to tell us is important?

The Monkey

Students will ask questions about the homework for clarification of the text. We will then discuss the following questions:

1. Why was the monkey washing the doll?

2. Do you think it was good of the Italians to teach the monkey to use a stick and why or why not?

3. Why, in your opinion, did the monkey not stop hitting the dog?

If time allows, in class reading of “Lazy Ned” (Lesson 7) and discussions about what Ned liked and did not like.

Students will ask questions about the homework for clarification of the text. We will then discuss the following question:

1. What conclusion can be reached by the story?

In class reading “Popping Corn” and discussions about why the girl calls the corn a flock of sheep after gathering them?

Students will ask questions about the homework for clarification of the text. We will then discuss the following questions:

1. What is this story about?

2. Why can it be dangerous sometimes to be at sea?

3. Why, in your opinion, is a sailors life a hard one?

Finally students will give feedback on the course and what they have learnt and how it will increase their learning abilities in the future if their critical thinking skills continue.
